CAT 2017: Exam Analysis and how the paper was

The Common Admission Test is finally done for the year 2017. The verdict on how the paper was and section-wise analysis, in brief, would be described hereon. The Common Admission Test on an overall level was rated to be of moderate difficulty. 

The overall difficulty of the CAT Exam was known to be moderately difficult. Quantitative Ability was the section that was known to be the easiest of the lot that was followed by the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension that was touted to be easy to moderate. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section was known to be the toughest section of all. The section -wise detailed analysis has been detailed as below. CAT Result would be announced in the month of January 2018.

CAT 2017

Verbal and Reading Comprehension:

The VARC Section had about 34 questions - 24 questions that were from the Reading Comprehension and 10 questions that belonged to the Verbal Ability section. The further important points relating to the section have been detailed as below: 

  • Reading Comprehension on an overall level had about 5 passages.
  • Three of them had 6 questions each and the remaining two passages had 3 questions each.
  • A majority of the questions were framed to test the ability of the candidates to interpret the passage in a thorough manner.
  • The difficulty level of Reading Comprehension was known to be easy. 
  • The questions from the Verbal Ability Section were mostly from Verbal Logic and did not carry any form of negative marking. 
  • The section had 4 non-MCQ subjective para-jumble questions that were time-consuming and quite tough to solve. 
  • About 3 non-MCQ questions on the "The Odd Man Out" were known to be moderately tough and overall confusing.
  • For a 95+ percentile, an attempt of 21-23 questions was considered good. 

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning:

This section was known to be really tough. The further details about the questions are as follows:

  • Two sets relating to Survey of students and Burgers and Fries were regarded to be very easy. 
  • Sets that were concerned with Routes between two cities, flight operations and square matrix were considered to be questions of medium difficulty level.
  • Some sets had 1 question each which were pretty tough and tricky. 
  • While DI did not require too much of calculation, Logical Reasoning was a little tough.
  • Out of 8 sets in total, the attempt of 3-4 sets was considered enough to score 99 percentile.

Quantitative Ability

  • This section had 34 questions that were carrying 7 non-MCQs. The difficulty level was definitely lower than that of the previous year.
  • The questions in this section were formulated to test the competence level of the candidates with regard to basic concepts.
  • Questions were asked from Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic and Mensuration and also Modern Maths.
  • Candidates attempting 27-28 questions on an accuracy level of 90% would be able to score 99 percentile.
