Basic concepts in Data interpretation

By: Vikram on November 04, 2016

Data interpretation can be got right if an examinee knows what he is dealing with and when to approximate or when to take the exact details. It is about understanding what each data set is trying to convey or anticipating how questions are posed based on each data set.

·         Always have clarity on whatever is given.

·         Have an idea of the effort or time that must be put in patterns of questions that are most repeated.

·         Zero in on only the relevant data that is required for you to compute the data.

·         Always compute whatever is required. Do not waste time on unnecessary things only to discover that it was not at all required.

·         If only relative values are asked, do not waste time on sticking so accurate to the actual ones.

When a table is given, look at the missing information and get a lead on where to begin from. Tables have a lot of scope for calculation of details not given and hence prepare yourself accordingly. Graphs can be in the form of bar diagrams, line diagrams, radar and point graphs. So, they might be comparison oriented questions or questions that might require calculating metrics. Radar graphs and point graphs may be tough to understand the trend of data, so make sure to practice those kind of questions to understand what would be asked. Last but not the least, keep assessing your strengths relative to the pattern of questions so that you may become good at identifying questions that match your strengths in the exam. All the best!
