AIIMS 2018: Supreme Court said that the standard of entrance exam cannot be diluted

The Supreme Court of India ruled out that the standard of the entrance examination for All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) should not be diminished and has also declined the online mode of entrance examination for the Under Graduate MBBS admissions scheduled to be conducted on May 26 & May 27, 2018 for the Academic year 2018.
Earlier some candidates have confronted the AIIMS Online mode of entrance examination. A bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice U.U. Lalit stated that, “In view of the difficulties pointed out in holding the off-line examination and the vulnerability of the same and advantages of on-line system of examination, we are satisfied that there is no merit in the Writ Petition. The Writ Petition is accordingly dismissed."
The Supreme Court while expelling the plea noticed that “standard of examination for AIIMS cannot be diluted”. The top court also stated that “If the executive is working towards maintaining the standard of the exam, then we must give them elbow room”.
AIIMS 2018 Entrance Examination is a national level examination, conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi. The examination is conducted to provide admissions to various Under Graduate courses offered by AIIMS New Delhi, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Rishikesh, Bhubaneshwar, Guntur, Nagpur, Patna and Raipur. The examination was scheduled to be conducted in online mode, in two shifts for two days. This was the first time that the AIIMS Entrance Examination was scheduled for two days.
Advocate Dushyant Parashar stated while defending AIIMS, that the difficulty level of the question papers for all the four shifts will be same and the percentile system of marking is the best merit to examine the aspiring students. According to him, approximately 4.5 Lakh candidates applied to appear for AIIMS 2018 entrance examination.
The advocate appellants Sneha Chandra Shekhar Fule challenged that the online entrance exam which will be conducted in four shifts will comprise of different level of difficulties. She has also asserted the percentile system of ranking, stating it an opaque process.
Earlier on April 2, 2018, the Apex Court asked AIIMS about the possibility of conducting the online and offline examination in one go. The court also asked Advocate Dushyant Parashar to reply to the matter of vulnerability, if the exam is held in offline mode. The AIIMS stated that the examination is scheduled for May 26 and 27, in two shifts. The first shift will be from 9 AM to 12:30 PM whereas the second shift will be from 3 PM to 6:30 PM.
