AICTE will not allow low employment potential disciplines from 2020-21 academic session

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will phase out conventional disciplines from the academic year 2020-21 that have low employment potential. They will only new and emerging fields like artificial intelligence (AI), Robotics that have high employment potential.

  •  Internet of Things(IoT)
  • Blockchain
  • Robotics
  • Quantum Computing
  • Data Sciences
  • Cyber Security
  • 3D Printing and Design
  • Virtual Reality

The technical regulator has prepared a perspective plan to impart the requisite skill sets to engineering students to enhance their employability and bridge the gap between industry needs and academic inputs provided to students in technical institutes. The HRD Minister also listed other initiatives to be taken by AICTE to increase the employability of engineering students like Smart India Hackathons and Entrepreneurship development.

Engineering students are being trained so that they can be a part off the Make in India initiative of the government. It has been observed that many of the technical graduates of the country have been unemployed or working in other fields of their specialization. In this view, the AICTE has decided that it is not going to allow the conventional courses to be run in the technical universities.

Compulsory internships have already been instituted by the AICTE to increase student-industry interaction.

Skill development has been a major area of focus for the current Modi government.  Skill India program being implemented to bridge the gap between industry needs and supply. The All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) is the statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.
