By: Avantika Bhardwaj on September 21, 2020

The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode widely known as IIM Kozhikode released CAT 2019 result on 4th January 2020 and there were almost 2 lakh 10 thousand students who appeared in the exam. The exam was conducted in two sessions i.e. morning and afternoon. IIM Kozhikode released the date of result declaration when the notification concerning CAT Exam date came out. Previously the result date was expected to fall during 2nd week of January 2020 but later changed to 4th January 2020. The result of Common Admission Test (CAT) holds significance as it is the only way to get admission to the Indian Institutes of Management and one of the ways to become a part of most reputed management institutions currently operating across the country. These business schools accept CAT Score and shortlist candidates based on candidates' performance in Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) round conducted by them.

Candidates who appeared in the exam can check their scorecard on the official website of IIM Kozhikode as it has been made available on the online portal of its official website. In order to check their score, the students would be required to enter their CAT ID and Password on CAT's official website.

CAT Exam 2019 has witnessed the largest number of test takers when compared to the last decade. As per the record, there were 2,09,926 students who appeared in the examination. The number of female candidates has increased to 75004, male candidates to 134917, and 5 transgender candidates also appeared in the exam conducted on 24th November 2019.

Importance of CAT Result:

CAT Result is considered the base of admission to Indian Institutes of Management and other reputed business schools which are not IIMs. The candidates who qualify the sectional along with overall cut off for the respective institute will be invited for Group Discussion and Personal Interview Rounds conducted by the institutes to shortlist candidates based on their performanceCommon Admission Test Result is given weightage during final selection also.

  • Scoring well in CAT Exam is one of the gateways to get through the admission procedure of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as IIMs do not accept any other entrance examination score when it comes to shortlisting candidates for admission to the programs offered by them.
  • Besides IIMs, there are various other business institutes that accept CAT Score. Colleges like Faculty of Management Studies (Delhi), SPJIMR Mumbai, Management Development Institute (MDI Gurgaon), etc. accept CAT Score to shortlist candidates for admission.

How is CAT Result Calculated?

Calculation of CAT Result depends on the marking scheme of CAT Exam and number of correct answers marked by students appeared in the exam. The exam pattern of CAT exam defined how the questions are given marks and the deduction of marks is based on marking incorrect answers.

  • The CAT Result is calculated based on the scores obtained by candidates in each section.
  • Candidates are awarded with 3 marks for each correct answer and 1 mark is deducted as penalty for each incorrect answer.
  • CAT Result is in the form of Percentile. The percentile indicates the value below which a given percentage of the candidate falls.

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?

The candidates can calculate their percentile by using the marking scheme explained below in this article. Candidates can also check their percentile using our CAT Percentile Predictor. As it has already been mentioned above that there is a difference between CAT Percentile and CAT Score obtained by CAT Aspirants.

Marks scored in CAT 2019 = (Number of correct MCQ Answers x 3) – (Number of incorrect MCQ Answers x 1) + (Number of correct Non MCQ answer x 3)

Students who are confused about their result or scorecard released by IIM Kozhikode can use this above-mentioned formula to check their exact score.

Important factors about CAT Percentile:

Only candidates who took the Common Admission Test are entitled to the receipt of the CAT Scorecard. The printout of the scorecard should be stored by the candidates for future reference as it is one of the essential documents required during the time of admission.

  • The Overall Score is the sum of scaled scores secured by candidates attempting questions correctly in all the three sections.
  • Percentile refers to the proportion of the candidates who receive a score less than or that equals the score that is gained by the candidates.

CAT Normalization Procedure:

The examination conducting authority of CAT Exam makes use of Normalization Procedure to ensure a system of fairness and equality when it comes to comparison of performances of CAT Aspirants across various test sessions.

  • This procedure makes an adjustment for differences arising in terms of location and scale preferences of score distributions across various forms. After adjustment of normalization across various forms, the scores would be normalized across different sections.
  • For reporting purposes, scaled scores of each section the Verbal, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation along with the percentiles shall be published.

How to convert Normalized Score to Percentile?

The percentile is calculated after scaled scores. The percentile rank will represent the position of the candidate by seeing how many candidates have scored the same or lesser than the candidate whose percentile is being calculated. Following is the formula to check Common Admission Test 2019 percentile:

CAT Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored less than or equal to the candidate/ Total number of candidates who appeared in exam) x 100

IIMs and Non-IIM member institutes independently decide the way to use CAT 2019 scores basing their respective CAT Selection Procedure. The scores should be used for selecting candidates to Post Graduate/Fellow Program in Management.

  • If any incorrect information is provided by the candidate or, any process is violated by the candidate shall be leading to the disqualification of the candidate.
  • All queries that are related to CAT Selection Procedure should be given to the respective IIMsCAT Organizing committee shall not issue answers to such responses. CAT Score shall stand valid only until December 31, 2020 and is subject to meeting the minimum eligibility marks in the qualifying examination.
