  • The candidate is awarded an additional 3 marks for each correct answer and a mark is deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • The CAT Result is in the form of Percentile. The percentile indicates the value below which a given percentage of the candidate falls.

CAT Normalization Procedure:

  • CAT makes use of Normalization Procedure to ensure a system of fairness and equality in the comparison of performances of the candidates across various test sessions.
  • This procedure makes an adjustment for differences arising in terms of location and scale preferences of score distributions across various forms. After adjustment of normalization across various forms, the scores would be normalized across different sections.
  • For reporting purposes, scaled scores of each section the Verbal, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation along with the percentiles shall be published.

CAT Percentile:

The CAT Result is usually declared in the form of a percentile. A percentile is a measure below which a given count of test takers usually fall. Based on this measure, candidates would be shortlisted in the best of B-schools.

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?

The candidates can calculate their percentile by using the marking scheme mentioned below:

Marks scored in CAT 2018 = (Number of correct MCQ Answersx3) – (Number of incorrect MCQ Answers x 1) + (Number of correct non MCQ answer x3)

Important factors about CAT Percentile:

  • Only candidates who take the Common Admission Test are entitled to the receipt of the CAT Scorecard. The printout of the scorecard should be stored by the candidate until further reference.
  • The Overall Score is the sum of scaled scores of the candidate in all the three sections.
  • Percentile refers to the proportion of the candidates who receive a score less than or that equals the score that is gained by the candidates.

How to convert Normalized Score to Percentile?

The percentile is calculated after scaled scores. The percentile rank will represent the position of the candidate by seeing how many candidates have scored the same or lesser than the candidate whose percentile is being calculated. Following is the formula to check Common Admission Test 2018 percentile:

CAT Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored less than or equal to the candidate/ Total number of candidates who appeared in exam) x 100

IIMs and Non-IIM member institutes independently decide the way to use CAT 2018 scores basing their respective CAT Selection Procedure. The scores should be used for selecting candidates to Post Graduate/Fellow Programme in Management.
