Educational Initiatives by CMC for Social Affairs

Christian Medical College, commonly known as CMC, is an educational institute in Chennai whose aim is to impart holistic education in order to make ethical leaders to reach out to as many people in the rural areas as possible. It has been accredited by UGC and NAAC for its contribution in helping those in need.
CMC Courses include 19 Postgraduate programs, 22 Higher Specialty programs at DM and Ch levels, 11 PG Diploma Programs, 5 M.SC. programs, and 43 Post-doctoral fellowship programs along with 40 Allied Health Sciences Programs.
CMC has initiated a model, Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) which has been serving needy and economically weak people since 1977 now. RUHSA has introduced short and long-term training programs along with educational workshops for health care professionals and mid-level health care providers who would retain help for the physicians while addressing the health concerns of the rural people.

Some of the Training programs devised by CMC are:
3 Years Bachelor's Degree Training for Medical Sociologists
The Medical Sociologists are made adept with proper training for assessing the qualitative experience of the patients. These sociologists work on the circumference of public health, social work and demography to decode methods at the intersection of social and clinical services. Thereby, the skilled graduates are qualified to work in hospitals, nursing homes, or social service agencies, who provide help to those with severe medical problems and disabilities.
RUHSA Certificate Course for Small Health Care Organizations
Around 100 students were trained under a 4-month certificate course in Integrated Rural Development from 1981-1991 and almost 647 were given training in Community Organization and Development from 1982-1997. These courses proved to be extremely beneficial for the NGOs to work efficiently even with limited resources in hand.
Orientation to Integrated Health and Development Model for Rural Health Care
More than 9,000 B.Sc. Nursing students at CMC were provided with a week's intensive training course to make them adapt themselves to rural health needs and with the components of a model rural health care program. Moreover, a number of international students from the Global Health Stream have spent time in RUHSA in the course of understanding the Health and Development Model, as promoted by RUHSA, for development of Rural Health Care in India and other low resource settings.
Underprivileged Youth Training for Employment through Community College Courses
Deriving its impetus from the PM's “Skill Indian” campaign, RUHSA developed an inclusive institution to provide employment-oriented education to the economically and socially disadvantaged groups. This vocational Training Centre provides courses in Automobile Four-Wheeler Mechanism, Automobile Two-Wheeler Mechanism, Electric Wiring and Motor Rewinding Mechanism, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanism, and a Beautician's course.
