Madras University, also known as the University of Madras, was established in 1840 with Mr. George Norton serving as its president. After the constitution had been in place for 14 years, the Indian government established the University in 1854 after establishing a systematic educational policy. Madras University is regarded as the founder of all previous south Indian universities. Madras University has been recognized by the UGC as one of the institutions with "potential of excellence" in the nation and has received an "A" rating from NAAC. With the mission of assisting students in achieving their career goals, Madras University expanded the campus of distance education in 1981. The institute provides 12 certificates, 16 diplomas, 22 undergraduate courses, 14 postgraduate courses, 9 postgraduate science courses, 5 professional courses, and more. With the goal of providing opportunities for better access to education and thereby raising the intellectual achievements of people from various sections of society, IDE aids students who are unable to pursue full-time study.
Programs in the UG, PG, Diploma, and Certificate domains are offered by Madras University's Institute of Distance Education. All the courses are provided under several disciplines. The courses are available in a variety of fields, including management, science, and the arts.

Students must have completed only intermediate with a minimum percentage from a recognized board in order to be eligible for any of the undergraduate programs. The University of Madras IDE offers courses in the postgraduate domain like MBA, M.A., M.Sc., MCA, and MCA (Lateral). Students must have graduated in the relevant subject from an accredited university in order to be eligible for this curriculum. The decision to select an applicant will be made based on their performance on the university's entrance exam. Exams at the national level like the CAT, MAT, XAT, and CMAT are accepted by the university for admission to an MBA program.
Apart from full-time courses, Madras University IDE also offers a few diploma, postgraduate diploma, and certificate programs in both part-time and full-time formats. Additional specializations for these courses include management, computer applications, tourism and travel management, cyber law and information technology, among many others.
Students may apply through both online and offline processes if they wish to enroll in any of the courses offered at Madras University IDE. For offline mode, students must go to the campus and pick up an application form. For online mode, they must first register themselves by going to the official website.

15 UG programs with a variety of specializations are available through Madras University IDE. The university offers courses in B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, B.BA, B.CA, and B.Lit. Each of these programs has a three-year duration and is offered full-time. To be eligible for any of the courses, students must have completed the intermediate level. Students must successfully complete the 10+2 grade from an accredited board in order to enroll in any distance education course at the University of Madras.
Numerous PG-level courses are available through Madras University's distance learning program. All of the courses are offered for two years at full time. The university offers M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MBA, and MCA programs. The prerequisite for eligibility is holding a bachelor's degree in the relevant field from an accredited university. For MBA admission, the university accepts the CAT, XAT, MAT, and CMAT scores; however, students must take the university's own entrance exam to be considered for the remaining courses.
