JEE Main Marks vs Percentile

By: Udit Trivedi on 2022-06-23 10:29:32
The National Testing Agency administers the JEE Main 2022 computer-based online test for candidates wishing to study engineering at India's top universities. JEE Main 2022 is the first stage of the IIT Joint Entrance Exam. It depends on the candidates whether they wish to crack either one or both of the exams. When determining the rank list, the exam administrators consider the highest NTA score. The JEE Main 2022 exam dates have been announced for both sessions for two papers namely Paper 1 (B.E/B. Tech) and Paper 2 (B. Arch or B. Plan).

More importantly, students are admitted to IITs, CFTIs, NITs, and other government-funded technical colleges based on their JEE Main scores. In addition, the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main will be eligible to take JEE Advanced which brings them a step closer to the goal of getting into the prestigious IIT. They can easily determine their rank based on their grades.

Why is the JEE Main Result given in Percentile?

The JEE Main 2022 exam will be held in two sessions over the course of five to six days, with two shifts each day. There's a chance that a given day's question paper will be more difficult or less difficult than any other day. Normalisation is used to overcome the possibility of difficulty parity. The normalised marks are not the candidate's actual marks, but a comparison score calculated by NTA using a specifically created method. Based on prior years' patterns and the normalisation formula used by NTA, the range of JEE Main marks vs percentile is calculated

JEE Main Normalisation Process

The percentile-based normalisation process will be included in the JEE Main exam for the fourth time. The normalisation approach is a widely used method of comparing candidates' scores over many sessions and question papers.

All components of the exam are normalised using percentile equivalency. All popular national and state-level admission tests include a normalisation method. To develop a solution that is affected by different shifts and question papers, the normalisation procedure is performed. It ensures that applicants are not disadvantaged or benefited as a result of the difficulty level of the examination.

The purpose is to protect the rule of law while also determining whether or not a claim has substance. Normalisation is a well-established approach for comparing applicant scores across numerous examination sessions, and it is comparable to the method used in India's other important educational selection tests.

How do JEE Main Marks and Percentile help in Analysis and Comparison?

JEE Main is amongst the most prominent examinations conducted by the National Testing Agency, which runs the test on its own to judge candidates' competency. The JEE Main exam attracts almost 12 lakh students. To ensure that the admissions process for these candidates is fair, the NTA has implemented a normalised scorecard based on merit.

By calculating their percentile score, students can compare their JEE Main Marks vs Percentile. One may simply determine their ranking in the JEE Main test by calculating percentile using marks. The method may be complex for some but it has been giving accurate results.

When comparing JEE Main Marks vs Percentile, a percentile score is a crucial thing to consider. It expresses a student's exam performance in contrast to all other students. A student's marks are the number of points he or she received in the exam, which is announced simultaneously with the result.

For Example,

JEE MAIN RANK

MARKS

PERCENTILE

1-100

300-291

100 to 99.99989156

102-500

290-289

99.994682 to 99.997401

501-1000

270-288

99.990989 to 99.994030

The formulas for computing the JEE Main percentile score are listed below:

  • A candidate's total percentile score= 100 x (The number of candidates having a raw session score equal to or less than the candidate's overall score) / (The total number of candidates who appeared in that particular session)
  • A candidate's Chemistry percentile score= 100 x (The number of candidates having a raw session score equal to or less than the candidate's Chemistry score) / (The total number of candidates who appeared in that particular session)
  • A candidate's Physics percentile score= 100 x (The number of candidates having a raw session score equal to or less than the candidate's Physics score) / (The total number of candidates who appeared in that particular session)
  • A candidate's Math percentile score= 100 x (The number of candidates having a raw session score equal to or less than the candidate's Mathematics score) / (The total number of candidates who appeared in that particular session)

JEE Main Rank Vs Percentile

When comparing JEE Main marks to percentiles, students must understand the rank each percentile receives.

How to Use the Available Percentile to Evaluate Rank?

By following a few basic steps, students can determine their position based on their JEE Main percentage. The following are important details to get before attempting to establish the rank:

  • Your NTA (National Testing Agency) score should be mentioned.
  • Determine the total number of students who took the exam.
  • Calculate the total number of students who received grades that were similar to yours or lower.
  • The percentage of students who scored higher than you.
  • The total number of students who scored higher than you.

Formula to calculate Rank from Percentile= Total number of students + 1 ((100 – NTA Rating)/100)

Tie Breaker and Exceptions:

Tie breaker procedures are used to break a tie when two or more applicants have equal percentile ratings.

In descending order, a tie between candidates with equal JEE Main scores will be settled as follows:

  • Total Score achieved in Mathematics,
  • Total Score achieved in Physics,
  • Total Score achieved in Chemistry,
  • Candidate with a lower ratio of tried incorrect responses,
  • Candidate with a lower ratio of attempted incorrect responses in Mathematics,
  • Candidate with a lower ratio of attempted incorrect responses in Physics,
  • Candidate with a lower ratio of attempted incorrect responses in Chemistry,
  • Age, the older candidate will be preferred,
  • Finally, Application number is considered. (In ascending order)

FAQs

Q1. What should my percentile be if I want my rank to be under 5000?

Ans. It is recommended that you score between 221-255 marks if you want to secure a 5000 rank or lower in JEE Main 2022. In percentile terms, your percentile range should be 99.852-99.988.

Q2. My Percentile is 90. What should be my marks range?

Ans. Aspirants must score between 70 and 75 marks to achieve the 90 percentile. However, even 90 percentile cannot guarantee an admission in top colleges like NIT,IIIT and NSUT. The results vary significantly by a mere 0.00001 percentile and hence, it is recommended to secure a percentile around 94-96.

Q3. What will be the qualifying percentile in JEE Main 2022?

Ans. Qualifying percentile for JEE main 2022 can range from 90 percentile upto 98 percentile.

Q4. Are category ranks and AIR the same in JEE Main?

Ans. No, they're not the same thing at all. The candidate's AIR is their overall rank, while their CR is their rank in their chosen category.
